Alternative Assessments (AAs)
CCS performs AAs at four different levels: (1) chemical, (2) product/article, (3) manufacturing process, and (4) wastestream. For chemical AAs, our Relational Chemical and Product Database (R-CPD) contains tables of alternative chemicals in over 60 functional categories (e.g., acids, solvents, surfactants, etc.). Alternative chemicals are selected by comparison of functionally equivalency, customer-specified requisite physical/chemical parameters, and comparative Green Chemical and Product Risk Assessments. Product/article AAs commonly compare Green Chemical and Product Risk Assessments for functionally equivalent products - either competitor items, or existing vs. new products. Product article AAs are routinely utilized to improve the greenness or sustainability of an existing product/article by substituting a greener constituent chemical.
Manufacturing AAs are performed similar to product/article AAs to improve the greenness or sustainability of the process, a step within the process, or the resultant wastestream, by substituting a greener constituent chemical.
Wastestream AAs are typically preceded by a Green Chemical and Product Risk Assessment to identify wastestream constituent chemicals of greatest concern. The wastestream is then improved by reverse engineering the manufacturing process to substitute a greener process chemical that eliminates the wastestream chemical of concern.
